Cancer. That one word can terrify anyone. Yet, every year, that diagnosis becomes reality for thousands of people across southern Saskatchewan. Thankfully, each year more of these patients win their battles against the dreaded disease, thanks in part to the support of Hospitals of Regina Foundation. Unit 3B at Pasqua Hospital is the only in-patient cancer care unit in southern Saskatchewan, featuring 26 patient beds. Patients can stay in Unit 3B for weeks or even months at a time, receiving treatments including chemotherapy and radiation. Caring, experienced staff provide patients with the physical and mental support they need. Donations to Hospitals of Regina Foundation helped furnish the rooms in the unit, to help make each patient’s stay as comfortable as possible. How early a patient’s cancer is diagnosed can often be a crucial determining factor in whether treatment is successful. That’s why Hospitals of Regina Foundation is proud to support innovative diagnostic centres, such as the Pasqua Hospital’s Breast Assessment Centre and Prostate Assessment Centre. The Foundation has helped equip the Breast Assessment Centre, which opened in 2006, with leading-edge breast imaging and diagnostic tools that offer patients a streamlined process, enabling them to undergo several procedures in one day. Last year, staff at the centre saw more than 3,100 patients and performed 4,585 breast exams and 556 biopsies. In 2007, thanks to the support of Foundation donors, the cutting-edge Prostate Assessment Centre was established. At the centre, patients can receive a diagnosis, explore treatment options and undergo treatment, while being provided information to help them understand the journey from assessment to recovery. In 2021, the centre performed 573 biopsies. The Foundation relies on the support of donors and the support of events like the Uncover the Cure Cocktail Party, Who’s Your Daddy, and the Power of Pink to ensure it can continue to help our medical teams provide the earliest possible diagnoses, as well as timely and effective treatment.
